While the past year, 2005, was full of challenges and obstacles, I want to thank all of you for your continued participation and support to our organization and community in the midst of it all, for it was only with your involvement were we able to overcome these same challenges and obstacles. Bearing this in mind, I’d like to again ask for your unwavering support and commitment as we strive to meet our obligations for the year 2006. As you all are aware we were able to launch our website www.lacosc.org this year! This has truly been a tremendous success as far as communicating with our members and friends! This medium, however, has unlimited possibilities and I encourage you all to use it to its full potential in terms of giving us your feedback on its usage, our performance on “getting the word out”, your thoughts and ideas for improving the site and our organization as well as suggestions for projects we may be able to undertake in the future that utilizes its potential. Ladies and Gentlemen as you are all aware, we have a series of activities scheduled for the year 2006, which are also posted on www.lacosc.org. The list of events includes an election for the Board of Directors of our organization on March 4 th, 2006. I would highly encourage all of you to join the process by either running for a position on the Board of Directors or campaigning for someone who wants to do so. Last but not least, I would also strongly encourage you all to be present and take part in the electoral process, making your choices known through the ballot box when this event is held on that day. As is indicative of the power of the people, please join me and my administration in saluting the people of Liberia for a transparent and mature political process that will usher in a new government on January 16, 2006. Let us also congratulate our new President Mrs. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and her team, wishing them all the success in bringing peace, development and fairness to all our Liberian brothers and sisters back home. ADVANCING OUR COMMUNITY TOGETHER THROUGH THE INFORMATION SUPER HIGHWAY!...The Age of Electronic Media has finally arrived at the Liberian American Community Organization! Let us not only embrace it, but also use it to our advantage! With the approval given by the Board of Directors of the Liberian Community, our tool of communication will now include the use of the INTERNET for most, if not all, of our communication with the community. A Hi-Tech Team has been set up by the Administration to launch and maintain this medium of communication on behalf of the Community. The team will also proofread and approve all articles, determine the cost of advertising and ensure the medium’s adherence to state and federal guidelines as being operated by a non-profit organization. The members of the Hi-Tech Team are:
As you already know, our Community now has an official website, www.lacosc.org. On November 25, 2005 the Community purchased it’s first computer, a top of the line HP Pavilion zv6000 series laptop, at a price of $1250.34. For this price, we were able to include power accessories, a 1 year full-coverage warranty and leather carrying case. With these tools, the Community will surely be better served in trying to get the word out to all of us in the following ways.
The Website will be useless without the input of our community members. Let us know when you celebrate that important event in your life! Tell us about your birthday, wedding, baby christening or graduation. Let us know when there is a loss of a loved one or if an unfortunate event has befallen you. We are also encouraging all of our more entrepreneurial minded community members to advertise your business on our website! What a great way to expand your influence in the community and abroad! With just a small fee, you will be declaring your business and services to a worldwide audience. (a fee will be charged for this service, proceeds of which will go towards supporting the Community's non-profit focus in bringing us together) We encourage you to utilize the WEBSITE by sending us articles to be posted, such as...
We will also use your email address to communicate directly with you. Hence, if we do not have your email address, please do provide us with one. Send your email to our LACOSC webmaster at webmaster@lacosc.org or go to the CONTACT US page on our website to send us a short email so that we can get back to you. You can then submit your article or story that you want us to post or you can communicate with the HI-TECH TEAM on any other subject... For all those who do not have access to the internet, the Administration will continue to communicate with you by regular US mail via the post office. Sincerely, David Beyan IN UNION, STRONG, SUCCESS IS SURE, WE CANNOT FAIL! ------- ------- o ------- -------

On October 28 th, Friends of Alex & Emily gathered at the home Mr. & Mrs. Alex Bowier, where they signed a giant-sized card and made voluntary financial contributions which were donated to the Peals to help with Alex’s recovery. Also, on November 6, 2006, the Liberian Community sponsored a well-attended special prayer service for Mr. Peal’s recovery at his residence. On Saturday, November 26, 2005 family members and friends also joined Mr. Peal as he celebrated his birthday! JOSEPH KUMEH SURVIVES BULLET WOUNDSBy Dave Beyan “Joe was not only lucky, he was blessed,” was how Regina, Joe Kumeh’s girlfriend described the scene. Joe wanted to purchase a pack of beer for the night, so he and Regina stopped by his regular liquor shop, just blocks away from his Inglewood apartment. Joe went in and made his purchase while Regina and her daughter waited in the car. He had no inkling that a gunman was hanging around there for him to arrive. As he sat in the car, they all began to hear a series of popping sounds. “First I thought it was some kids shooting fire crackers,” Regina assumed. Seconds later, Regina’s daughter, in the back seat, noticed Joe, leaping off his seat, as if trying to get into the back seat. She screamed out, “Joe, were you shot?” Yes, death had narrowly missed Joe! He had been shot multiple times!! The gunman, following Joe from the liquor shop, rained bullets at the car at close range, determined to kill him. The first shot went through his left palm as he was fastening the seat belt, severely wounding his hand. When he lifted the other arm to grab on the wounded hand, another bullet went through his elbow, narrowly missing his head. Instantly, Joe leaped from his seat and flew towards Regina, screaming at her to start the car and leave the scene. Just then, the determined gunman shot four more times at the car. One of those shots lodged in Joe’s hip, barely missing his spinal cord. It was Regina’s quick action in leaving the scene that helped save their lives, as she took off from there at high speed. Joe was later taken to a hospital where he underwent numerous surgeries for his wounds. No one else was injured in the incident. Police are now looking for the gunman and the motives for his action. Joe has been an active member of the Liberian Community for more than a decade. He once served as a member of the Board and is very popular and sociable. His escape from this tragedy was indeed a sigh of relief for the Community. Joe, Regina and her daughter need the prayers of all of us. ------- ------- o ------- ------- |
