LIBERIANS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CELEBRATE THEIR NATION’S INDEPENDENCE

They came from Los Angeles, San Diego, the Inland Empire, Lancaster, some from as far away as Minnesota and Maryland, all for one purpose, to celebrate the 158 th independence anniversary of their country, Liberia. And Celebrate They Did!

On July 30 th, 2005, the Hawthorne Memorial Center was the scene of joy and jubilation.

Over 200 Liberians and friends of Liberia came together in their African or western attire to celebrate this memorable day. It looked like a family reunion where hugs and kisses became the event’s first unofficial business. For the main event, Rev Sanubo Toeque II was the guest speaker. In his remarks, Rev Toeque charged Liberians present to do away with deceit, envy, hatred and rumor-mongering. He said the task of rebuilding Liberia from the rubble of civil war requires us to all be united in purpose.

After the speech, the guests were treated to a sumptuous dinner of steak, mixed vegetables and rice. Patrons were served wine to help the food go down well. When it was all said and done at the dinner tables, the real party began! Yes, the long awaited ball took center stage.

Whether the music was African or hip-hop, reggae or old-school Liberian tunes from yester-years, the floor was packed to capacity. The guests wanted more, even at 1:30 AM when it was announced that the event had ended. Numbers were exchanged, contacts were made and life-long friendships were struck up or renewed. All in all, it was a memorable experience for all present. Take a look for yourself!
