Liberia On Fire!!! (an article by David Yleah Jr.)
Liberia is currently burning with election fever! As many of you already know, the people of Liberia will be going to the polls on October 11 to vote for a new leader. Following many years of war, the upcoming presidential elections will provide an opportunity for Liberians to choose a president who will lead the country into a new era of peace and reconciliation.
I am looking for individuals who will partner with me to spend a minute (or more) of the next 14 days to pray for the country and people of Liberia. Please send me a short email to let me know that you will be praying for Liberia. I have provided some factoids and items you can use to offer prayer for Liberia.
Factoids
1. Liberia founded in 1847 by freed slaves from the US
2. The capital city Monrovia named in honor of US president James Monroe
3. Liberia civil war started on December 24, 1989; ended in 2004
4. More than 250,000 Liberians killed during the war
5. Liberia has had no running water and electricity for the past fifteen years
6. At least 85% of the population of Liberia is unemployed
7. A quarter of Liberia's population is displaced or in refugee camps in neighboring countries
8. There are less than 100 physicians in Liberia
9. Liberia is about the size of Tenessee and has a population of nearly three million
10. A interim government led by Gyude Bryant currently governs Liberia; I met Mr. Bryant personally in July
11. Liberia has the largest United Nations peacekeeping contingent (15,000) in the world
12. Twenty-three (down by nearly 50%) candidates are contesting for Liberia's presidency
13. A soccer star, a United Nations envoy to Somalia, and a seasoned female politician are the three frontrunners of the presidential race
14. Around 40% Liberians are Christians; 50% traditionalists; 14% muslims

1. For a godly leader to emerge victorious in the presidential polls
2. Peace and reconciliation among 16 major ethnic groups in Liberians
3. For jobs to be created for ordinary Liberians
4. The church to be a radiant light in the new Liberia
5. Christians to become involved in leadership and affairs of the country
6. Funds promised by donor nations to flow in to help with reconstruction and rebuilding
7. Transparency and accountability in the new Liberia
8. The eradication of Corruption
9. The elimination of Poverty
10. Liberians living abroad to become involved in the rebuilding process
11. Foreign churches/leaders to train/equip Liberians for the tasks ahead
12. A revival in the hearts and mind of Liberians everywhere
13. NO to war; YES to peace and reconciliation
14. The provision of safe havens and educational opportunities for orphans and child soldiers created by the Liberian war
15. God's glory to reign in Liberia again!
